Psychodynamic psychotherapy and psychoanalysis are usually considered forms of long term treatment. However, approaches using psychoanalytic principles to guide brief therapies have also been around for decades. Further, clinicians practice brief treatment when many patients leave therapy after a few weeks or months. Panelists address various aspects of this modality: Dr. Donovan, one of the pioneers in studying brief treatment, will talk about finding the focus. Dr. Hugenberger will speak about applying modern psychoanalytic ideas to brief therapy, based on her experiences with patients using Employee Assistance Program benefits (EAPs).
Presenters:
James Donovan, PhD has made numerous contributions to the mental health field. He has had multiple teaching appointments through Harvard Medical School, has lectured widely and has authored or co-authored multiple publications. Since 1988 he had been the Co-Director Mental Health Fellowship Post-Doctoral Fellowship, Harvard Pilgrim Health Care & Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates. A major focus of his work and research since the early days of managed care has been short term psychodynamic therapy. One of his books, Short-Term Couple Therapy is currently in negotiations for a second edition release.
Patricia Hugenberger, MSW, PsyaD has over thirty years of clinical experience. She has applied her psychoanalytic training to work in mental health clinics, schools and private practice. She is on the faculty of the Boston Graduate School of Psychoanalysis where she is the Director of the Department of Continuing Education.

- Discuss finding the focus in brief work.
- Discuss identifying and working with patient’s treatment goals in EAP work.
